Mayor Jakob von Mayreck built himself this palatial residence. The highly ornate three-story façade was decorated with vases and putti, with pilaster and arched-gable framed windows and a portal group crowned with the family crest. The groin vault at the entrance gate and the artistically rendered stucco ceiling from 1720 in the Festival Hall on the first upper story make it one of the most imposing Baroque burgher houses in Stein.

A marble tablet on the façade commemorates Mozart scholar Ludwig Ritter von Köchel. Though not born in this house, he did spend his adolescence there. Köchel was born in the Passauer Hof (Steiner Landstrasse 74) in 1800, where his father had an office as an official of the Bishopric of Passau. He took extensive study trips to collect minerals and plants and applied equal diligence to  recording Mozart’s world famous notes, all the way to the Requiem, Köchel Verzeichnis 626. It was for this catalog that he has gained lasting fame.
